Landed ten minutes early last night, no issues at customs or immigration, and Rach was waiting for us. Perfect! We arrived at her flat about 2330, and met her roommate Pete. Great guy. Ate my first Tim Tam, a biscuit (cookie) that has no equivalent (and few equals) in the U.S. Somehow I wasn't freakin' exhausted and we all chatted a while. When we finally went to bed around 1am, instantaneous sleep hit hard.
Awoke this morning to the sights and sounds of tropical, colorful, loud birds. Parakeets, a cockatoo or two (sorry, I haven't slept much), and I think I heard the oft-mentioned Australian magpie, but can't confirm it.
It's very green here, overcast, a little drizzly, and hot dang, I'm in Australia! Day 1 of 48. This morning I get to meet Jayne, long-time pen pal, and we're all going to a beach somewhere. Can't wait.

Okay, so when I said we were going to a beach somewhere, I didn't realize it was six blocks away from the apartment! Brekkie (breakfast) was great, though service was slow. Monique and I didn't care; It was an open-air restaurant, we had a view of the beach, the conversation with Jayne and Rachel was good, and there was no drone of jet engines in my ear. Jayne had to dash off to work, so when Rach left to pick up Glenn and Meg, Monique and I wandered Balmoral Beach.
Terrific mini-coves of shells, glorious rock outcrops and formations, loads of sand-scoured rocks with holes and crevices. The water's warm, the wind gentle, and the rock textures and formations could keep me entertained for hours.
Thai food tonight, hopefully a nap this afternoon.
For Carla: I think the ant I saw in the hallway is deadly poisonous, the saltwater dried my toes out, and the scrambled eggs were almost too loose, even for me.
I have a headache, it's very humid here, and driving on the wrong side of the street makes me nauseous. Oh, and I nearly lost a game of chess to a completely-distracted 10-year-old. The U.S. dollar's weaker against the Australian dollar, so this trip will be very expensive.

We're going to try to meet up with Andrew & Llysa tonight for dinner. After a three-hour hard nap, I'd be happy with cheese and crackers. It was silly to not expect some jet lag; if all it means is some afternoon naps, then I live in a constant state of jet lag. Off to dinner!
